Creating
a Print-Rich Classroom:
The Power of Posters!!!
by
Theresa Zanatta
For each level of New Parade
there is one poster pack with nine posters (one poster
for each unit). So New Parade has seven poster packs63
posters in totalto help you introduce, teach,
and review the unit.
What is a Print-Rich Classroom?
A print-rich classroom is a classroom in which students
and teachers find lots of words, letters, pictures,
and text all around. When you walk into a print-rich
classroom, you know right away what is being taught.
Usually the student's work is displayed, there are posters,
murals, word walls, bulletin boards, and displays of
the books students are reading.
The best thing about print-rich classroomsapart
from the fact that they are filled with the children's
workis that I always get such a good feeling when
I walk in. Being surrounded by the English that children
are learning and doing is a wonderful feeling! One of
my favorite parts of visiting schools is talking to
the students about the work that is on display. Their
faces light up with pride when they eagerly shout out
the words of things they have made and are studying.
It is easy for them to remember and say what they know
when they see reminders around the classroom.
Why Create a Print-Rich Classroom?
We know that a print-rich classroom helps students become
familiar with letters and words. We know that a classroom
filled with lots of pictures and words helps students
learn to read. Everyone is reading. Everyone is remembering!
Everyone is achieving. Everyone is learning and it's
there for all to see!
Phrases like 'our personal best' and 'signs of success'
are a regular part of my classroom dialogue because
my print-rich classroom is filled with examples of my
students personal best work and their signs of success.
It's my students' work that creates my print-rich classroom
and it all begins with one little poster!
How Can You Create a Print-Rich
Classroom?
The New Parade Poster Pack can be your basic
tool as you create a print-rich classroom. As you begin
working on a unit, up goes the poster! By the time you
finish the year you have nine beautiful posters with
all the key vocabulary of the year on display.
Even if you do not have your own room, you can still
take advantage of the posters. I taught for many years
in a language institute where we had to change classes
and where many different classes used the same room.
My first request was to have a little section of the
room designated for my class! This little corner of
wall space was where I hung my posters, put up my word
wall, and displayed my students' 'personal best' workour
signs of success!
