Theresa ZanattaBeginning the Class

by Theresa Zanatta

Each level of New Parade has a poster pack with nine posters (one poster for each unit). So there are seven posters poster packs - 63 posters in total - to help you introduce, teach, and review the unit. Here are some ways to begin each class!

An oral review

Do a quick five-minute oral review by asking the students to look at the poster with you and identify the vocabulary they see. Choose three words and ask the students to remember them. Then write each word on a piece of paper and turn them over so that the words are not visible.

Ask each student to turn to the student beside him or her and see if the pair of students can remember which three words are no longer visible. The idea is for the students to help each other, to speak, and to listen. Give the students 60 seconds to try to recall the three words, and to come up to the poster and point to the items. Then ask other students in the class if they can help. Then ask the students to turn the cards over to see if they were correct.

'We Remember…' Game

Put your students in groups of five. Give each group a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask the students to choose a secretary and reporter. Tell the students they have two minutes to try to remember the names of all the things they see on the poster. The secretary writes all the words on the paper.

When the two minutes are up, invite each reporter to come up to the poster. Each reporter reads his or her group's list and points to the item on the poster as he or she reads it. The group with the most words correctly identified by the reporter wins.

I usually have small things—such as English magazines, small books, and videos from my own collection—as prizes. I lend these out to students for the night as prizes. Sometimes I also bring small treats like oranges, candy, and cookies (all of which are to eat after class!!!).
