Problem
Pairs
Many
of the problem pairs below come from Right Word Wrong Word
by L G Alexander. This book contains more than 5,000 examples
of words and structures confused or misused by learners of
English. It also contains a useful collection of exercises.
Cars
and driving
Have
you got a 1 car/auto? I have
and I don't know what I would 2 make/do without
it. Every morning I get in and sit on the 3 chair/seat. I 4 begin/start the
5 motor/engine. I
6 drive/conduct the
car to the end of the road and then 7 turn/turn left.
Then I go up the 8 incline/hill towards
the supermarket. I go 9 passed/past the
supermarket. The 10 road/route is
11 quiet/quite wide
but the speed 12 limit/restriction
is still 30 miles per hour 13 because/so there
are a lot of houses 14 beside/along the
road. Sometimes I stop at the 15 service/filling
station beside the supermarket to 16 fill/fill up with
17 essence/petrol.
Last
night I looked at my 18 map/chart and
discovered a short cut to my office. I tried that route today.
I took the third exit from the 19 roundabout/circus
and drove along a small country 20 motorway/road. Suddenly I had to 21 cease/stop the
car because the road was 22 shut/closed. I
put the car into reverse 23 speed/gear and
drove 24 backwards/to the rear
until I could turn the car around. My short cut was so unsuccessful
that I arrived 25 to/at work ten
minutes 26 late/later!
When
I get 27 to/at work I usually
leave my car in the 28 parking/car park.
I 29 close/turn off
the engine and close the 30 windows/glasses.
I 31 lock/secure the
car and then I go into the office.
